Shamrocks, Shenanigans & Sweet Family Traditions ☘️

Simple ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with kids — from meaningful history to magical memories.

By Lyndsey Mercado March 9, 2026

St. Patrick’s Day is more than just wearing green and searching for leprechauns — it’s a holiday filled with history, culture, food, and fun traditions that families can enjoy together. Whether you’re Irish or just Irish-at-heart for the day, here’s everything you need to know to make March 17th memorable for your family.

🌈 The Origin of St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated every year on March 17th in honor of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.

Saint Patrick was born in Britain in the late 4th century and was kidnapped at age 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave. After escaping, he later returned to Ireland as a missionary and is credited with spreading Christianity throughout the country. One of the most famous legends says he used the shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity.

Originally a religious feast day, St. Patrick’s Day has grown into a worldwide celebration of Irish culture — complete with parades, music, dancing, and lots of green!

Fun fact: The first St. Patrick’s Day parade didn’t happen in Ireland — it took place in New York City in 1762!

💚 Why Do We Wear Green?

Green is associated with Ireland because of its lush landscape (often called “The Emerald Isle”) and its national symbol, the shamrock. According to folklore, wearing green makes you invisible to mischievous leprechauns who like to pinch anyone they can see!

Perfect excuse for a little playful family fun!
