Snow & Ice on the Way: Simple Safety Tips for Families

Practical winter safety tips for the whole family.

By Lyndsey Mercado January 22, 2026

When snowflakes start falling and roads turn icy, winter can feel magical—and a little intimidating. A snow or ice storm doesn’t have to be scary, though. With a bit of preparation and some common-sense safety habits, families can stay warm, safe, and even enjoy the cozy side of winter weather.

💙 Before the Storm: A Little Prep Goes a Long Way

Taking care of a few things ahead of time can make storm days much smoother.

  • Stock up smartly: Have easy meals, snacks, water, and any needed medications on hand in case travel becomes difficult.
  • Check the basics: Make sure flashlights work, batteries are fresh, and phones or power banks are charged.
  • Warmth matters: Locate hats, gloves, scarves, and boots for everyone—kids grow fast, so double-check if they fit!
  • Pet prep: Bring pets indoors or make sure outdoor animals have shelter, food, and unfrozen water.

🌨 During the Storm: Stay In and Stay Aware

When ice and snow are falling, staying home is often the safest choice.

  • Limit travel: Icy roads can be unpredictable, even for experienced drivers. If you must go out, slow down and allow extra space between vehicles.
  • Dress in layers: If kids head outside to play, multiple warm layers help keep body heat in—and dry clothes are a must.
  • Watch for slips: Ice can hide under fresh snow. Encourage everyone to walk slowly and hold onto railings when possible.
  • Use heat safely: Fireplaces, space heaters, and candles should always be supervised and kept away from anything flammable.

📱 Power Outages: Keep Calm and Cozy

Winter storms sometimes knock out electricity, but a little planning can help.

  • Stick together: Choose one warm room for the family to gather in.
  • Never use grills indoors: Outdoor cooking equipment can create dangerous carbon monoxide buildup.
  • Check on neighbors: A quick call or text—especially to elderly neighbors—can make a big difference.

❄️ After the Storm: Take It Slow

Once the snow stops falling, hazards can still linger.

  • Shovel safely: Take breaks and don’t rush—heart and muscle strain is a real concern.
  • Watch for falling ice: Icicles and heavy snow can slide off roofs unexpectedly.
  • Refreeze risk: Melting snow can turn back into ice overnight, so keep an eye on walkways and driveways.

⛄️ Finding the Fun! ⛄️

Snow days don’t have to be all worry. Build a snowman, enjoy hot cocoa, read together, or break out board games and puzzles! A little joy goes a long way during stormy weather.

Winter storms remind us to slow down, look out for one another, and enjoy life’s quieter moments. With a few safety steps in place, your family can weather the storm—warm, prepared, and maybe even smiling! ❄️
